Haritatos Estate: Terroir-driven Wines from Kefalonia

Haritatos Estate is a family-run winery in Kefalonia, where the Haritatos family has been growing grapes since 1863. Today, siblings Ioanna, Haritos and Konstantinos Haritatos continue this long tradition, producing small-batch wines that express the unique terroir of this Ionian island.

A family vineyard on Kefalonia

The estate is located in Lixouri, on the Paliki peninsula of Kefalonia.

The vineyards benefit from warm Mediterranean days, cool nights and limestone-rich soils, creating ideal conditions for indigenous Greek grape varieties including Vostilidi, Mavrodaphne and Muscat.

The result is a collection of fresh, expressive wines with a strong sense of place - wines that feel unmistakably connected to Kefalonia.

Vostilidi: a rare Greek white grape

One of the varieties that makes Haritatos particularly exciting is Vostilidi, a rare indigenous white grape associated with Kefalonia.

Haritatos Hariton is a beautiful expression of the variety, showcasing the freshness and character that makes Vostilidi so interesting.

It's exactly the kind of grape I love discovering - relatively unknown outside Greece, deeply connected to its home region and capable of producing distinctive wines with real personality.

Mavrodaphne beyond sweet wine

Kefalonia is also home to Mavrodaphne, a variety that many wine drinkers associate primarily with sweet, fortified wines. But Mavrodaphne can produce much more than that.

At Haritatos, the grape is part of a broader exploration of what indigenous Kefalonian varieties can do in dry, contemporary styles. Rose de Haritatos is a refreshing rosé example of the grape, whereas Mademoiselle Haritatou is a wonderful chilled red perfect for the summer.

The estate's Madame H offers a chance to experience Mavrodaphne from a very different perspective, with the grape's darker fruit and savoury character balanced by freshness.

It's another good example of why looking beyond the familiar styles of a grape can completely change your perception of it.

Regenerative viticulture

What makes Haritatos Estate particularly special is that sustainability isn't simply a marketing concept - it is central to how the estate operates.

The vineyards are dry-farmed, low-yielding and tended entirely by hand. The wider estate is deliberately managed as a diverse ecosystem, with olive groves, orchards, medicinal herbs and grazing sheep and goats all forming part of the landscape.

This biodiversity helps create a more naturally balanced environment around the vines and reflects a broader philosophy of working with the land rather than trying to control it.

The result is an approach to viticulture that is both regenerative and deeply traditional.

Old traditions, a contemporary approach

Although the Haritatos family has been growing grapes on Kefalonia for more than 160 years, the wines are far from being stuck in the past.

The current generation is combining this long family history with minimal-intervention winemaking, allowing the character of the vineyards and indigenous varieties to take centre stage.

That combination of heritage and experimentation is one of the things I find most compelling about Haritatos Estate.

The wines don't try to hide where they come from. Instead, they embrace the particular climate, soils, varieties and farming practices of Kefalonia.

For me, Haritatos represents everything that makes exploring Greek wine so rewarding.

It's a small family estate, working with rare indigenous grapes in a distinctive island environment, while practising regenerative viticulture and producing wines in small quantities.

Kefalonia has a fascinating wine heritage, but its wines remain relatively underrepresented in the UK. Bringing Haritatos to Pale Ruby Wine is a chance to showcase a completely different side of Greek wine - one shaped by the Ionian climate, limestone soils and unique varieties of the island.
