Rapsani PDO: Discover Greece's Mountain Wine Region on the Slopes of Mount Olympus

When wine lovers think of Xinomavro, they often think of Naoussa or Amyndeon. But one of Greece's most fascinating expressions of the country's flagship red grape comes from much further south, on the legendary slopes of Mount Olympus.

Rapsani PDO is one of only four PDO appellations dedicated to Xinomavro and the only one located outside Macedonia. Its dramatic mountain vineyards, unique field blends and centuries of viticultural history produce some of the most distinctive red wines in Greece.

At Pale Ruby Wine, we're proud to be the exclusive UK importer of Papadopoulos Viticulture, a family winery crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines that capture the character of this remarkable region.

Where Is Rapsani?

Rapsani lies on the eastern slopes of Mount Olympus, Greece's highest mountain and the mythical home of the ancient gods.

Vineyards are planted between approximately 200 and 800 metres above sea level, benefiting from:

  • Cooling mountain and sea breezes

  • Large day-to-night temperature differences

  • Diverse soils of slate, schist, clay and limestone

  • Excellent drainage

  • Long, slow ripening seasons

These conditions help preserve freshness while allowing grapes to develop complexity and balance.

The result is a style of wine that combines power with elegance—hallmarks of great mountain viticulture.

What Makes Rapsani PDO Unique?

Unlike Greece's other Xinomavro appellations, Rapsani PDO requires a blend of three indigenous Greek grape varieties:

  • Xinomavro – providing structure, acidity, tannin and ageing potential.

  • Stavroto – contributing supple fruit and softer tannins.

  • Krassato – adding richness, colour and generosity.

Together, these native grapes create wines that are more approachable in youth than many single-varietal Xinomavros, while still retaining freshness, complexity and excellent ageing potential.

It's a blend that could only come from Rapsani.

What Does Rapsani Wine Taste Like?

A classic Rapsani red typically offers aromas and flavours of:

  • Sour cherry and black cherry

  • Raspberry and wild strawberry

  • Dried tomato and olive

  • Mediterranean herbs

  • Sweet spice

  • Earthy mineral notes

On the palate, expect vibrant acidity, fine tannins and a long, savoury finish that makes these wines exceptionally food-friendly.

If you enjoy Nebbiolo, Sangiovese or elegant Northern Rhône reds, Rapsani is well worth discovering.

Papadopoulos Viticulture: A New Generation of Rapsani

One producer helping define the future of the region is Papadopoulos Viticulture.

During our visit in May, we walked every vineyard with Dimitris and Nikos Papadopoulos, tasting wines directly from tank and exploring how each parcel expresses itself through differences in altitude, exposure and soil.

Every vineyard told a slightly different story, but together they revealed the extraordinary diversity of Rapsani's mountain terroir. What stayed with us just as much as the wines were the people.

The generosity of Dimitris and Nikos, the home-cooked meals shared around the family table and the conversations that stretched long into the evening reminded us that great wine is never just about what's in the bottle. It's about family, landscape and tradition.

Those are the stories we're proud to bring to the UK.
